LISTENING SKILLS AMONG KUIPs STUDENTS BASED ON THE STANDARDS OF THE REFERENCE FRAMEWORK

Abstract

Listening skills are among the basics of acquiring and learning a second or foreign language because they are receptive skills, as any learner begins with listening, analysis, perception, and understanding until he can reach the level of speech production and conversation, which is called oral interaction. Previous studies indicated that the field of teaching the Arabic language and learning it to non-native speakers is still in a state of backwardness in terms of deficiencies in determining the level and evaluating linguistic proficiency, especially in listening skills. Based on this problem and the importance of listening skills; This study aims to analyze the comprehension of listening skills in the Arabic language by male and female students at Kolej Universiti Islam Perlis (KUIPs). To achieve the aim of the study, the researchers used the descriptive analytical method; The researchers designed a questionnaire that contains ten (10) questions that contain all the information related to the students during their study of Arabic language as a second or foreign language, focusing on listening skills. This study was applied to a random sample of (205) male and female students from the Bachelor’s Degree Programs and the Diploma Program of Arabic Language at KUIPs. The researchers used SPSS to analyze the questionnaire and process the data statistically: percentages, relative weight, and standard deviation. The study found that the student’s proficiency level in listening skills corresponds to the B1 level with concern to the common reference levels -the self-assessment record- according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language Learning, Teaching and Evaluation (CEFR), and it corresponds to the intermediate level (third) with concerning to the reference levels proposed in the Framework of Reference for Teaching Arabic Language. In light of the results of the study, the researchers recommended evaluating the curricula for teaching and learning the Arabic language to non-native speakers at Perlis Islamic University and designing the curricula according to the standards of the unified frame of reference to improve students’ listening skills.
