Social Literary Exegesis: A Systematic Study Between Sayyid Qutb And Rashid Ridha]

Abstract

This research aims to compare the approaches of Rashīd Riḍā and Sayyid Quṭb in the social literary interpretation of the Qur’an. The research addresses the concept of social literary exegesis and the way Rashīd Riḍā and Sayyid Qutb dealt with the Qur’an, as each of them is considered one of the most prominent scholars in the field of social literary exegesis. Then, a comparison is made between the two approaches by indicating the areas of divergences and convergences. In achieving this goal, the research adopts an analytical approach, by referring to their approaches and methods of exegesis and visiting some other works written about them. Among the most important findings of the research are: (1) The unification of their main goal of the interpretation of the Qur’an, which is the advocacy for complete social reform through comprehensive enforcement of the Islamic system in all aspects of life, intellectually and methodologically. (2) The agreement of their attempt to strive to achieve what the Qur’an was revealed for, which is guiding and directing people to righteousness, by refining tafsīr from the Israelites, myths, fabrications, and other things that distract people from the original goal for which the Qur’an was revealed. The research also revealed that when the text collides with science, you see Rashīd Riḍā forcefully defending the position of science and trying to normalize the text in order to agree with science or reject the text, while you always see Sayyid Quṭb defending the text by refuting the suspicions raised against the text.
