The Case of Alternation of Prepositions an Applied Grammatical Study: The Last Two Juz (Parts) of the Holy Quran as a Case Study

Abstract

This paper aimed at studying the grammatical issue of preposition alternation in the holy Quran, analyzing and elucidating the Kuffans’ and Basrans’ views about the interchanging of prepositions, in addition to the contemporaries’ views, The researcher then applied these views on the prepositions that appeared in the verses of the last two Juz (parts) of the holy Quran; in order to analyze and explain the prepositions that appear in place of other prepositions with the aim of showing their hidden meanings. In order to actualize these aims; the researcher utilized the descriptive analytical method, The research shows that a preposition can have more than one meaning, and it can also represent or be interchanged with other prepositions, This research also shows that there are ten prepositions that appeared in the last two Juz -out of the twenty Arabic prepositions- and there are many verses where these ten prepositions were interchanged or alternated in the last two Juz of the holy Quran, where a preposition stood in the places of other prepositions. Based on these, the researcher enjoined and advised that the issue of prepositions should be given proper attention and study by the grammarians especially the Mufassirin and the Muhaddithin; in order to understand the hidden meaning.
