The Contributions of Abu Hayyan Al-Andalusi Towards Arabic Grammar: A Case Study of His Book “Irtishaaf ad-Darb”

There is no doubt that the human language is the basis on which the life of human societies is based, and it is the means of understanding and communication between societies, and it is carry their cultures and civilizations. Therefore, if it were not for the language, humanity would not have been able to advance, and the Arabic language was designated by Almighty Allah among the languages with the Holy Qur’an which continued to preserve the language in the last fourteen centuries and counting until the last hour. Allah says “Verily, We, it is We who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e the Qur’an) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption).Q15:9. He also said “Verily, We have made it a Qur’an in Arabic that you may be able to understand. It was known that Abu Hayyan is a man with a long history in the field of linguistic studies. He is not an ordinary grammarian or commentator, but rather he has a distinguished thought and an analytical mentality. This is evidenced by the encyclopedic books he wrote, such as: “Al-Irtishaf,” “Al-Bahr Al-Muhit,” “Al-Tathil wa’l-Takmil,” etc. In addition, this research deals with the personality of Abu Hayyan Al-Andalusi in the field of linguistic studies and reveals his insight into how issues of grammar and morphology are presented in his book “Al-Irtishaaf”. Therefore, in conducting this research, the researchers approached an inductive approach in order to understand Abu Hayyan’s work, in addition to the analytical approach, which helps the researchers to uncover Abu Hayyan’s valuable ideas in order to understand his position in studying grammatical issues and their methodology in the book “Irtishaaf ad-Darab”.
