The Obligation of Tajweed in the Recitation of the Noble Qur'an: A Foundational Study

Abstract

This study, entitled "The Obligation of Tajweed in the Recitation of the Noble Qur'an: A Foundational Study", seeks to underscore the significance of the science of Tajweed and to establish the evidences supporting the obligation of reciting the Qur'an with proper Tajweed. The research addresses a prevailing misconception among some students of knowledge who believe that Tajweed is merely a supplementary art rather than a religious obligation. This study aims to refute such misconceptions and affirm the mandatory nature of applying Tajweed rules during Qur'anic recitation. The paper begins by defining Tajweed linguistically and technically, then traces its historical development, clarifies its objectives, and outlines effective methods for its acquisition. It then presents the evidences from Islamic sources that affirm the obligation of Tajweed. Additionally, the study categorizes types of errors (lahan) and provides some illustrative examples of common mistakes encountered in Qur'anic recitation. The research concludes with a summary of key findings and offers pertinent recommendations.
